Damaged teeth that are too weak or worn down to perform normal biting and chewing functions can be restored with dental crowns. A dental crown acts like a protective shell that gives a damaged tooth a strong, new exterior. At Bella Dentistry in Athens, our skilled dentist, Dr. Chanda Bennett, can restore your damaged teeth with custom dental crowns.

What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are hollow caps that fit over damaged teeth and completely encapsulate them to protect, strengthen, and restore those teeth. Dental crowns look like regular teeth so the appearance of your smile will not be affected. Further, each dental crown is custom created to look as natural as possible and to fit perfectly over its corresponding tooth. At our office in Athens, our dentist can have custom dental crowns created for your damaged teeth.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

There are numerous benefits associated with dental crowns, not the least of which is the restoration of damaged teeth. Once restored, damaged teeth will be strong enough to resume normal biting and chewing functions. Plus, dental crowns protect those teeth from becoming damaged further. The benefits of dental crowns include:

  • Strengthening damaged teeth
  • Protecting against further damage
  • Restoring normal tooth functioning
  • They look completely natural
  • Each crown is custom made

In addition to strengthening and restoring damaged teeth, dental crowns can also be used to improve the appearance of teeth with cosmetic concerns. Since a dental crown completely encapsulates the problem tooth, any flaws will be hidden. Stains, discolorations, cracks, chips, and other issues can be easily concealed. Not only can damaged teeth be made stronger, but teeth with cosmetic issues can be given a more pleasing appearance.

If you have ever had restorative dental work done, you have probably come across the terms “crowns” or “bridges”. But what are these dental crownsdental restorations and what do they do? With help from your Athens, GA dentist, Dr. Chanda Bennett at Bella Dentistry, you can get answers to your questions about crowns and bridges.

What are crowns?
Crowns are a cap-like restorative dental appliances which fits over the top of a tooth. Crowns strengthen and provide stability to a damaged or weakened tooth.

What are bridges?
Bridges replace a missing tooth by connecting the gap between two natural teeth. A permanent or fixed bridge is made up of two crowns on either side of a prosthetic tooth. The crowns fit over the natural teeth and anchor the restoration into place. Bridges also come in removable form, using metal clasps to attach the restoration onto the teeth.

How are crowns and bridges made?
A lab technician at a dental laboratory carves crowns and bridges from a ceramic block. A mold of your teeth helps the lab tech design and customize the restorations. The porcelain used to create your new tooth is color-matched to your surrounding teeth to ensure a natural appearance.

How are crowns and bridges fitted onto the teeth?
Crowns and fixed bridges require your Athens dentist to prepare the teeth before placing the restoration. The crowned teeth are shaped to fit the inside of the crown exactly by removing small pieces of enamel from the sides and top of the tooth. This ensures a perfect fit and makes room for the crown. Your dentist fits the crown onto the prepared tooth and uses dental cement to anchor it into place.

How do I care for my bridge or crown?
Crowns may be cared for exactly like your natural teeth. Bridges, however, require some extra work. Due to the space underneath the bridge, you should use special threader floss to clean the underside of your bridge. This is important to reduce the risk of bacteria buildup on the teeth and gums, which leads to decay and gum disease-causing plaque and tartar.
