If you have ever had restorative dental work done, you have probably come across the terms “crowns” or “bridges”. But what are these dental crownsdental restorations and what do they do? With help from your Athens, GA dentist, Dr. Chanda Bennett at Bella Dentistry, you can get answers to your questions about crowns and bridges.

What are crowns?
Crowns are a cap-like restorative dental appliances which fits over the top of a tooth. Crowns strengthen and provide stability to a damaged or weakened tooth.

What are bridges?
Bridges replace a missing tooth by connecting the gap between two natural teeth. A permanent or fixed bridge is made up of two crowns on either side of a prosthetic tooth. The crowns fit over the natural teeth and anchor the restoration into place. Bridges also come in removable form, using metal clasps to attach the restoration onto the teeth.

How are crowns and bridges made?
A lab technician at a dental laboratory carves crowns and bridges from a ceramic block. A mold of your teeth helps the lab tech design and customize the restorations. The porcelain used to create your new tooth is color-matched to your surrounding teeth to ensure a natural appearance.

How are crowns and bridges fitted onto the teeth?
Crowns and fixed bridges require your Athens dentist to prepare the teeth before placing the restoration. The crowned teeth are shaped to fit the inside of the crown exactly by removing small pieces of enamel from the sides and top of the tooth. This ensures a perfect fit and makes room for the crown. Your dentist fits the crown onto the prepared tooth and uses dental cement to anchor it into place.

How do I care for my bridge or crown?
Crowns may be cared for exactly like your natural teeth. Bridges, however, require some extra work. Due to the space underneath the bridge, you should use special threader floss to clean the underside of your bridge. This is important to reduce the risk of bacteria buildup on the teeth and gums, which leads to decay and gum disease-causing plaque and tartar.
